Gadar 2 review: Sunny Deol’s actioner is stale and could have been avoided

There are many references to the first film, with many familiar faces and a few new ones. Things take an ugly turn when Jeete himself is kidnapped and awaits Tara’s rescue. In the midst of all of this, Deol simply vanishes from the picture, only to return to go on a rampage in Pakistan to retrieve his son. When Jeete meets Muskaan (Simrat Kaur) in Pakistan, he also meets his love interest.
I’m not complaining about Utkarsh’s screen time, but with all of the focus on him, Gadar 2 appears to be more of a launch pad for the director’s son while leveraging Tara Singh’s fandom. Utkarsh is competent, if not outstanding, in his scenes. While the first half portrays him as an innocent young man aspiring to be an actor, the second half portrays him as the ultimate action hero — beardless, brooding, rough and tough like his onscreen father.
Sunny Deol brings back his character’s innocence, and his scenes light up the screen. Tara is a peaceful man who uses extreme violence only when necessary, if you look closely. That’s evident in scenes where he punches a Pakistani cop in the face and doesn’t bother picking up the rifle that could have come in handy later. Ameesha is ordinary and doesn’t try to be anything other than what she was in the first film. In fact, I found her to be rather dull and soulless. Tara and Sakeena’s chemistry, on the other hand, remains as sweet and pure as you’d expect. Wadhwa, who plays the antagonist, has a strong screen presence and looks evil.
Gadar 2 is a little too long at 2 hours 50 minutes and could have easily been cut by 30 minutes. The writing of Shaktimaan Talwar is not clever. There’s nothing in the dialogues that makes you go “Wow,” and the ones that get the most applause — Hindustan zindabad — we’ve heard before. The recreated versions of the songs — Main Nikla Gadi leke and Udd Ja Kale Kaavan — were my favorites. They are the film’s soul and transport you back in time. The additional songs are also a breath of fresh air that does not disappoint. When it comes to valour and patriotic fervour, there is no shortage of chest-thumping patriotism, and they do provide some whistle-worthy moments. Tara and Jeete have plenty of opportunities to show off their skills in Gadar 2’s non-stop action sequences in slow motion.
Gadar 2 falls short in terms of story and pace, but it reintroduces mass entertainment, which will undoubtedly make it a paisa vasool watch.
