The NFL world responds to the Chiefs’ odd late-game choice in their devastating defeat to the Lions.

The 2023 season didn’t kick off the way the defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, had envisioned. They suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of the Detroit Lions, losing by a mere point, 21-20. Nevertheless, the aftermath of the game was dominated by discussions surrounding a peculiar late-game decision made by Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid.

Facing a challenging fourth-and-25 from their own 30-yard line, with 2:09 remaining and still possessing three timeouts and the two-minute warning, Reid opted to go for it. Despite the unconventional call, Mahomes came close to turning it into a brilliant move. Mahomes shifted left and delivered a highly catchable pass to wide receiver Skyy Moore, who, unfortunately, couldn’t secure the ball.

Despite their best efforts, the Chiefs fell short, prompting a wave of criticism from pundits on social media.

What added to the perplexity was Reid’s reluctance to go for it on fourth-and-short earlier in the game. The Chiefs settled for field goals twice on fourth-and-2 and chose to punt on similar situations in the second half. Notably, they were also penalized for a false start on the previous play, pushing them back five yards on fourth-and-20. Nevertheless, Reid stuck to his guns and went for it again, even with an opportunity to rethink his decision.

The outcome reflected a larger issue for the Chiefs that night: drops. While officially credited with four, it felt like much more. To compound matters, all of them occurred on crucial third-down plays. Receiver Kadarius Toney accounted for three drops, including one on a pivotal pick-six by Lions rookie defensive back Brian Branch, a play that swung the momentum in the second half.

Thursday night proved to be a challenging one for both the Chiefs and Coach Reid. As they approach their Week 2 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, many may be inclined to paint a bleak picture for the defending Super Bowl champions.

Yet, it’s important to remember they still have Mahomes, and the imminent return of tight end Travis Kelce from injury is likely. Counting out the Chiefs at this point would be a significant overreaction.
