Review

Four years after the original Dream Girl, director Raaj Shaandilyaa serves this comedy, which was delightful for its quirky set-up and premise. The premise of the sequel is similar. Karamveer (Ayushmann Khurrana) must quickly raise a large sum of money in order to marry his girlfriend, Pari Shrivastav (Ananya Panday).

So he disguises himself as Pooja and works as a dancer at Sona Bhai’s (Vijay Raaz) bar. After that, the film offers little new in its 133-minute runtime. Raaj and Naresh Kathooria, the writers, attempted to amp up the comedy, but the narrative went haywire and ended up as a mishmash of situations and characters pursuing each other.

Pooja attracts unwanted attention from Shoukiya (Rajpal Yadav) as she pretends to be a psychiatrist treating his brother Shahrukh (Abhishek Banerjee), who is depressed following a breakup. As a rich person’s disease, the trivialization of a mental health disorder is appalling.

Abu Saleem (Paresh Rawal), Shahrukh’s father, believes that marrying Pooja is the cure, and the family vows to reward her with Rs 50 lakhs for the unison. Among this is Shahrukh and Shoukiya’s sister Jumani (Seema Pahwa), who is in love with Karam while his father Jagjit Singh (Annu Kapoor) is not. Some tracks drag on indefinitely as the viewer tries to keep up with the characters’ antics, such as when Karam switches between being himself and Pooja as Sona Bhai and Jumani arrive at the same place and time to meet him. Many comedic scenes are unnecessary, do not advance the plot, and only add to the length—much like Jumani impersonating Shah Rukh Khan. While dialogue is a comedy’s strong suit, the one-liners in this film are kitschy and appear forced.

When attempting to persuade Karam to become a dancer, his friend Smiley (Manjot Singh) remarks about an elderly customer, ‘Shakti nahi bachi par Shakti Kapoor poora bacha hai.’ While songs appear one after the other, the music by Meet Bros and Tanishk Bagchi is unmemorable, with the exception of Dil Ka Telephone 2.0, a remake of the film’s first installment’s hit.

In the film, Ayushmann Khurrana expertly switches between the roles of Karam and Pooja. He shines especially in the dance sequences, nailing the latkas and jhatkas. Ananya Panday is adequate, has limited opportunities to shine, and struggles with consistency in her Braj Bhasha dialogue delivery. Annu Kapoor stands out, while Paresh Rawal, Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz, Manjot Singh, and Abhishek Banerjee provide solid support.
Dream Girl 2 stays on familiar ground, frequently deviating into unnecessary comedic tangents. Despite some standout performances and moments, the film falls short of its predecessor’s quirky charm.
